CHAPTER SIX

Smith returned with a doctor I’d seen before. The man took one look at me, another at Mrs. Fletcher, and then shook his head. “You two have a bit of having been through it about you.”

I wasn’t sure what he meant by that, but I gestured to my throat and shook my head.

“Bea has lost her voice,” Smith told the man, and doctor’s expression did not nearly convey how frustrated I was by that turn of events.

Generally speaking, being without my voice would have been maddening. Being without my voice while also being the victim of some mad prankster villain was entirely unacceptable. If only my voice agreed with me and came trotting back.

By the end of having been look over, there was no sign that it would be returning just because I wanted it. The doctor patted me on the head which made me want to scratch out his eyes. “You’ll be better soon, love.”

I was not his love. I shot Smith a glance and his lips twitched, but he didn’t convey my message to the doctor. Rather than letting the man continue to condescend to me, I rose and left the room. I could hear Mrs. Fletcher being checked over, but I was ready to leave the house. I couldn’t stay there when anyone and everyone could let themselves in.

I went into the kitchen, found the whiskey and considered swigging some. However, Mrs. Fletcher and I had both partaken the previous night, and I would be damned if I’d be drugged again. I dumped it down the sink and then considered the reality that someone had been through my home. Suddenly I needed to see my babies and ensure they were all right.

Intellectually, I knew they were, but I also knew that I wouldn’t be able to think clearly until I held each of my three girls in my arms, listened to their breathing, and nuzzled their cheeks. I took the key to the auto while Smith was discussing things with the doctor and motored to Vi’s house.

Given that I was still ill, I took the servant’s entrance and the back steps up to the nursery. When I reached the room, with its bright, big windows and the row of cribs where my babies lay, I breathed a sigh of relief.

I crossed to the first crib and found Rosalie. I lifted her, breathing her in. The soft, sweet scent of her was all that I needed to feel better. With Rosalie in one hand, I scooped Ella with the other. They were all breathing easier I saw. Calliope, once so silent, met my eyes and squawked at me.

I shifted so that my nanny could hand swap babies with me, and I could nuzzle Callie as well. I looked at the nanny and whispered, “They can’t go home until we get a new issue sorted.”

It was a good thing that the nanny knew what she was getting into when we hired her.

We were nothing but a mess, and I needed to rock my babies one-by-one and feel their healthfulness.
